How it works
How the course works, step by step
This is how the course is designed to work. The course is pending approval, and enrollment is not open yet.
1. Set up your account and identity questions
At enrollment you provide your legal name and the details the California Department of Insurance requires for completion reporting. You also set up personal identity questions that only you can answer.
2. Study 12 hours, actively
The course requires at least 12 hours of active study. Only active time counts. You can stop and resume at any time within your 180-day access period.
3. Signed out after 20 minutes of inactivity
If you are inactive for 20 minutes, you are signed out and the idle time is not counted. Sign back in to continue where you left off.
4. Identity checks along the way
When you enter the course, and at intervals while you study, you answer one of your identity questions. You must answer correctly to continue.
5. Review questions after each section
Every section ends with multiple-choice review questions. If an answer is wrong, you see the correct answer with an explanation. You can go back to any section at any time.
6. The final exam
The final exam opens after you finish all sections. It has 36 multiple-choice questions and a 90-minute time limit; the passing score is 70%. You have 3 attempts, and each retake uses different questions. Exams are not returned.
7. Sign the completion affidavit
After you pass, you sign an electronic affidavit, under penalty of perjury under the laws of the State of California, that you personally completed the course and the exam without help and that no one else used your login.
8. Receive your certificate
Your certificate of completion appears on your dashboard. A prelicensing certificate expires three years after the completion date. Keep it for five years.
9. Reporting to the Department of Insurance
We report your completion to the California Department of Insurance within 10 business days.
Ask the instructor
